FMI Ninth Annual Survey of Owners - Thursday, November 13, 2008

For the third year in a row, COAA Owners participated in the annual FMI Survey of Owners.  The focus of this year’s study was on understanding how program- or project-level risks are assessed or managed prior to or during project execution (planning through turnover) and how they impact an Owner’s overall capital program.  FMI analyzed the frequency of occurrence and severity of impact of specific risks, and more broadly, how Owners tend to manage construction risks by electing to use certain strategies, tactics or processes.  FMI found that on average, 61% of the time, Owners are accepting and managing risks, 22% of the time they are accepting and transferring risks and the balance of time they avoid risks. To download the survey (PDF) members may log in to the members-only section of the website and visit "Industry Resources/Links."

Albert E. Phillips Scholarship - Deadline January 31, 2009

COAA acknowledges that education is a critical element to the success of those pursuing a career in our industry and wishes to help ensure the growth of the industry by providing financial support to those who are committed to a course of study in the design and construction industry.

 
Albert E. Phillips Scholarships are intended for full-time undergraduate students who have successfully completed their freshman year in a technical field of study such as architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, construction management, or similar.

Eligible students must be either:

  • An employee of a COAA Member Organization
  • A relative of an employee of a COAA Owner Member Organization

Sustainable Solutions for Owners:
Smarter Steps, Smaller Footprints

COAA's 2.5 day conference will be kicked off by a session on energy efficiency that will include an open-mic discussion of what folks are doing to cut life cycle energy costs. In total, the conference will feature 16 sessions, eight of which are devoted to sustainability-related issues. The other (8) sessions cover a variety of subjects, including BIM, best practices for GMP development, contractual issues, and a small/minority business case study from South Florida. The meals and receptions (included with your registration fee) provide an excellent atmosphere to network with other owners around the country. The conference will close with a special behind-the-scenes tour of Busch Gardens and some free time in the park.
