The Benefits and Risks of Design-Assist Contracting

Speaker Bio:

Cy is a veteran construction management professional with over thirty-five years’ experience. Cy’s experience encompasses five major hospital projects, a variety of corporate interiors projects, and several senior living facilities throughout the USA. As a subcontractor working for a global curtainwall / architectural façade fabricator, Cy has been involved in a variety of complex projects utilizing the design-assist approach to contracting. While earning his master’s degree in Construction Management at Purdue University, Cy worked as a Faculty Lecturer and Industry Projects Coordinator while assisting the faculty in a complete transition of their curriculum to a project-based, active learning environment. While performing several projects as a design-assist subcontractor, Cy developed an interest in the risks inherent in this type of delivery method. Cy’s 2017 master’s thesis is titled How are Contractors Defining Design Assist. Cy has also published a 2018 paper for the Associated Schools of Construction titled Contractors’ Knowledge and Understanding of Design Assist Contracting Risks. Currently, Cy is a Senior Project Manager in Purdue’s Capital Program Management group overseeing several projects including a new Equine, Large Animal, Small Animal, and Food Animal Hospital for the schools College of Veterinary Medicine. Cy and his wife of 35 years, Diana reside in West Lafayette, Indiana.
