Thank you to everyone who joined us for the COAA-IL Workshop on Master Planning! 
Oakton Community College recently received Board approval for their Master Plan which includes $53 million for various capital and deferred maintenance projects. They are now in the implementation phase with the first major renovation under construction.  The panel, representing the Owner, Owner’s Rep and Architect, shared how they approach master planning from an analytical perspective to balance aspirational goals with cultural needs. In addition to a thorough overview of their master planning approach, the team emphasized the importance of setting and managing expectations throughout the process.  The team shared how Oakton leveraged the master plan’s vision to balance changing desires between generations of stakeholders and mitigate “space grabs” for vacated or reorganized areas. Data gleaned from a space utilization study helped stakeholders understand how existing facilities are being used. While the results surprised stakeholders, it also brought clarity to the plan. Attendees also learned about opportunities to mitigate risk through processes and programs like stakeholder signoffs and realistic forecasting of staffing and programs. Lastly presenters shared tips for everything from data visualization tools to lessons learned. After Q&A attendees enjoyed networking over drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
