10:45 - 11:45 am Session II - PreFabricated Exterior Walls for Increased Campus Safety, Sustainability and Expedited Project Delivery

The often-competing requirements for campus safety, sustainability, and ever-tighter capital project design and construction schedules are demanding innovation in how campus buildings are designed and constructed.  With an aggressive occupancy schedule, immediately adjacent occupied housing, and major campus pedestrian and vehicular traffic passing by, Western Michigan University’s new Arcadia Flats Apartments needed a unique solution to enclosing the structure in rapid time.  The use of prefabricated exterior wall panels were employed to avoid dangerous scaffolding conditions and to ensure a quick enclosure during inclement weather and containment of construction noise for the students housed next door.  Coupled with the campus’ sustainability goals for construction waste reduction, the prefabricated wall systems offered a unique solution to achieve these objectives.  This presentation will share the unique collaboration and commitments required by the Owner, Designers, and Constructors to implement this solution and will explore the limitations, opportunities, and synergies of using these systems.
  • Attendees will assess adapting new prefab technologies to enhance campus safety, security and sustainability
  • Attendees will review innovative sustainability projects and procedures
  • Attendees will be able to identify products that may enhance campus safety, security and sustainability
  • Attendees will be able to identify safety and security strategies with sustainable design considerations/opportunities
  • Attendees will calculate the secure/safe and sustainable trade-offs and synergies
