Clay started his career with Nashville-based Smith Seckman Reid (SSR) in June 1979 after graduation from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He served as a design engineer in the Nashville office before relocating to Houston to help open SSR’s first branch office. After two years of leading the mechanical design work for the Houston office, he took over managing the office, which he did for the next 10 years. He relocated back to Nashville in 1996 to assume an operations role in the healthcare division, which he did for the following 15 years. He retired in 2022 as Senior Principal and National Healthcare Market Sector Leader.
Clay’s focus has been in project management and delivery methodologies, market sector strategy, and client relationships. His technical expertise originally included HVAC design for major healthcare and institutional facilities, including facility assessments and systems evaluations, facility master plans, replacement and expansion projects. He led SSR’s development of alternative service lines, including technology and medical equipment planning.
Clay has served on several national healthcare-related organizations and industry committees, including American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Health Facilities Guidelines Revisions Committee. He co-authored ASHE’s Health Facility Commissioning Guidelines and the subsequent Commissioning Handbook. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and is recognized for his knowledge of the healthcare market and emerging trends in facility design, construction, and management.
